The current Secretary of Labor for the United States is a politician, consumer advocate, and civil rights attorney Thomas Edward Perez. Perez, a Democrat, previously held the position of Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division. Buffalo, New York, birthplace Perez is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Brown University.
Prior to working in the Justice Department from 1989 to 1995 as a federal prosecutor and deputy assistant attorney general for civil rights under Attorney General Janet Reno, Perez served as a legal clerk for the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado. Until 1998, he was a Special Counselor for Senator Ted Kennedy.
