Later, The State adopted the moniker The New Group. After presenting their work in New York City's theatres, pubs, and clubs, they began production on the MTV program You Wrote It You Watch It. This resulted in The State (1993–1955), a self-titled television series that was nominated for a Cable Ace Award for Best Comedy Series.
Lennon, Kenney Ben Garant, and Michael Ian Black went on to produce and appear in the Comedy Central program Viva Variety when The State failed following a one-night run on CBS (199799). The Mr. and Former Mrs. Laupin Variety Programme skit that Lennon had created for The State's final season served as the basis for the program.
