Thomas Kunkel Biography

The seventh president of St. Norbert College, the only university in the world established by the Norbertine order of priests, is the novelist, journalist, and educator Thomas Kunkel. Before moving to St. Norbert, Kunkel spent eight years as the dean of the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism, where he also held positions as editor and director of the Project on the State of the American Newspaper, president of the American Journalism Review, and dean of the American Journalism Review. Early in his career, Kunkel worked for a number of newspapers, including the San Jose Mercury News, Miami Herald, New York Times, and Cincinnati Post. He has written or edited six books, the most recent of which, Man in Profile: Joseph Mitchell of The New Yorker, was released by Random House in April 2015. His other works include Letters from the Editor (2000), a collection and analysis of Harold Ross' letters, Enormous Prayers: A Journey into the Priesthood (1998), an ethnographic portrait of 28 Catholic priests, and Genius in Disguise (1995), a biography of The New Yorker's founding editor Harold Ross that was widely praised.
