Thomas Kail Biography

Hamilton and In the Heights were produced on Broadway and off-Broadway under the direction of Tony Award–winning film and theatre director Thomas Kail. For his work on Hamilton, Kail won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical. Kail was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for his work as director of In the Heights, which had its Broadway premiere in 2008. Other theatre projects directed by Kail include the off-Broadway production Broke-ology, and the Broadway productions Magic/Bird and Lombardi. While the two were both students at Wesleyan University, Kail met Miranda, with whom he has worked on several projects for a long time. They collaborated to form the freestyle hip-hop ensemble Freestyle Love Supreme, which performed at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, American Comedy Arts Festival, and Montreal Comedy Festival.
