In June 2009, Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H., was appointed both Administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the United States and around the world, Dr. Frieden has fought to control both communicable and noncommunicable illnesses. From 1992 to 1996, he oversaw a program in New York City that effectively combated TB and reduced the number of cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis by 80%. After that, he spent five years working in India, where he helped with the country's TB control initiatives. More than 10 million people have received treatment under the program in India, and more than 1 million lives have been saved. From 2002 until 2009, he served as commissioner of the New York City Health Department, where he oversaw one of the largest public health organizations in the world, with a $1.7 billion annual budget and more than 6000 employees. During his administration, the number of smokers fell by 350 000, the amount of teen smoking fell by half, and New York City became the first city in the US to strictly monitor the diabetes epidemic and ban trans-fats from restaurants, as well as mandate that some eateries prominently display calorie information. Along with eradicating racial/ethnic gaps in colon cancer screening rates, the Department significantly enhanced colon cancer screening. The agency launched the biggest community electronic health records initiative in the nation under Dr. Frieden's direction.
