In June 2009, Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H., was appointed both Administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the United States and around the world, Dr. Frieden has fought to control both communicable and noncommunicable illnesses.
From 1992 to 1996, he oversaw a program in New York City that effectively combated TB and reduced the number of cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis by 80%. After that, he spent five years working in India, where he helped with the country's TB control initiatives.
