Alex Karpenko created Luma in 2011 after discovering how to stabilize video recordings using a smartphone's gyroscope. Instagram eventually purchased Luma. Time-lapse video editing was suggested by Thomas Dimson, a former Luma employee.
The popular Instagram app Hyperlapse, which enables iPhone and Android users to make their own time-lapse videos with only a few finger swipes, was born through their partnership with designer Chris Connolly. We probably had mass-market success because we encouraged such experimentation, says Dimson.
