Courses in American literature and culture are taught by Thomas Augst. His writing focuses on nineteenth-century literary history and the interpretation of various media and forms of literacy in connection to issues with the nature of ethical behavior, the structure of knowledge, and the cultural politics of contemporary liberalism.
He co-edited Institutions of Reading: The Social Life of Libraries in the United States (UMass 2007), The Clerk's Tale: Young Men and Moral Life in Nineteenth-Century America (Chicago 2003), and Cultural Agencies and American Libraries (2001). He got research funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation after receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard University.
