born in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, England, on October 7, 1968 At the age of seven, Thomas Edward Yorke, better known by his stage name Thom Yorke, began playing the guitar. At the age of ten, he started his first band. Yorke, who was born with a birth defect in his left eye, had several operations as a young child and was frequently bullied by his friends. At the Abingdon School for Boys, Yorke formed the band On a Friday with guitarist Ed O'Brien and bassist Colin Greenwood. The band's principal vocalist and lyricist was Yorke. Phil Selway, a drummer, and Jonny Greenwood, a guitarist, organist, and harmonica player, were soon added. The group briefly split up when Yorke moved to enroll at the University of Exeter, but they later came back together to make a number of demo cassettes. The recording firm EMI was interested in one of the cassettes Manic Hedgehog. The group was signed to a six-album deal by EMI in 1991 as they searched for the next big grunge band. After a Talking Heads song, On a Friday was renamed Radiohead the next year. Three tracks from the band's 1992 first EP Drill, issued by EMI, would subsequently appear on Pablo Honey, the group's debut album from 1993. The debut single for Radiohead was called Creep.
