Thomas Henderson Mount was born in Durham, North Carolina, and grew up there, graduating from Durham High School and, like so many of his generation, leaving home to travel across America. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts in 1972.
Mount began working at Universal Pictures in 1973 as an assistant to Vice-President Ned Tanen. Mount directed the production of a number of black exploitation films, including Car Wash, Which Way Is Up, and Bustin' Loose, among others.
