Dr. Mason, an experimental condensed matter physicist who took over as lab director on July 1, 2007, has used neutron scattering as his main method of study, with support from X-rays, transport measurements, and thermodynamic analysis. Dr. Mason earned his Ph.D. in physics from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1990 after earning his B.Sc.
in physics from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1986. From 1990 to 1991, upon the completion of his degree, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
