Theresa Flores Biography

For more than twenty years, Ms. Flores has had a social worker license. She graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Social Work and the University of Dayton with a Master's in Counseling Education. In 2009, Ms. Flores was named to the Ohio Attorney General's Human Trafficking Commission. She has testified in favor of legislation against human trafficking before the Ohio House and Senate. Her efforts had a significant role in the achievement of these proposals becoming laws. Additionally, the "Theresa Flores Law" that nullifies the statute of limitations for minors who have been trafficked was approved in Michigan. Flores, a survivor of domestic child sex trafficking, was sold between the ages of 15 and 17 in an underground criminal network in an affluent suburb outside of Detroit. She currently collaborates with other survivors while serving as the Assistant Investigator for Global Centurion's study of the mental and physical health issues affecting more than 200 victims of domestic trafficking. The research "The Health Consequences of Human Trafficking" will offer systematic guidance and best practices for healthcare professionals. She has won several honors, including the 2013 Christian Service Award from the University of Dayton Alumni Association for her work with S.O.A.P. Governor Kasich of Ohio presented Ms. Flores with the Courage Award in January 2012 during the State of the State Address in recognition of her efforts to combat human trafficking.
