At the Studio Museum in Harlem, where she started her work, Thelma Golden serves as director and chief curator. She served as the museum's deputy director for programming and exhibits from 2000 to 2005. Golden worked for ten years as the director of the Whitney Museum at Phillip Morris and staged a number of ground-breaking shows there.
She was added to the Committee for the Preservation of the White House by President Obama in 2010. She serves as the Cultural Institutions Group's vice chair for Manhattan. Golden possesses a Barnard College Medal of Distinction as well as three honorary doctorates.
