Theaster Gates is the creator and president of the Rebuild Foundation as well as the University of Chicago's director of developing arts programs. He is a "cultural strategist," a musician, and an artist. Gates alter places, organizations, customs, and perceptions through his performances, installations, and urban interventions.
Gates has a great understanding of the poetics of production and systems of organizing because of his schooling as an urban planner and sculptor and his later time spent studying clay in Japan.
