The Xx Biography

The xx is an atmospheric English indie pop band that was created in London when the band members were still in high school using the skills of Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, Baria Qureshi, and Jamie Smith. The group's captivating and hip inspirations range from R&B (Aaliyah and Rihanna) to traditional alternative rock (the Cure and the Pixies). The group's distinctive style of melancholy, soulful indie rock, built on the vocal harmonies of Croft and Sim, initially caught the attention of the general public in early 2009 with the single Crystalised, which generated a lot of talk among both reviewers and fans. In July of that year, The xx released their self-titled debut LP in the U.K.; the U.S. followed one month later. Late that year, Qureshi left the group. The other members of the xx issued a statement via NME explaining that Qureshi's departure was due to personal issues. The live performances continued in 2010, and they appeared at a number of prestigious summer festivals. In September, their record was awarded Britain's prestigious Mercury Prize. The Drake song Take Care sampled the duo's song I'll Take Care of U when Smith and Gil Scott-Heron were working on the remix album We're New Here. A pair of songs, Chained, and Angels, were released in the middle of 2012 to promote the group's second album, Coexist, which came out in September. The band's song Together was used on the soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby movie the following year. The xx started production on their third album in 2014, and they recorded it in a variety of locations, including Marfa, Texas; London; Reykjavik; and Los Angeles. 2015 saw the release of Jamie xx's solo debut, which included work from Sim and Croft. On Hold, a song released in January 2017, highlighted the album's more upbeat, eclectic style at the end of 2016.
