The War on Drugs from Philadelphia operates at the hazy edges of American music, overexposing studio constraints by stacking tape on top of the tape to maximum density before removing the scaffolding with each song to reveal what sticks, keeping only what is absolutely necessary, and delving into what sounds like the best kind of messed up.
As with their 2008 first album, Wagonwheel Blues key member Adam Granduciel uses fleeting moments captured on several cassettes and song iterations while putting every last bit of faith in his own acute sense of momentum. Not to minimize the incisive, original songwriting at work here. There are undoubtedly references to our country's finest bards (Dylan Petty Springsteen).
