The Wallflowers Biography

The Wallflowers had a special bond with one of the primary influences during the roots-rock renaissance of the mid-'90s: singer-songwriter-guitarist Jakob Dylan. The Wallflowers are more influenced by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers than the original '60s folk rock, despite the fact that Jakob Dylan is the son of a legend. Lyrically, though, Jakob still closely resembles the original Dylan. After his parents divorced in 1977, Jakob Dylan was born in 1970 and was raised by his mother Sara Lowndes in Los Angeles. By the late 1980s, after attending prestigious schools in New York and Los Angeles, he had made up his mind to take after his father. Along with bassist Barrie Maguire, drummer Peter Yanowitz, keyboardist Rami Jaffee, and guitarist Tobi Miller, he founded the Wallflowers and signed with Virgin. The Wallflowers' self-titled first album, which was released in August 1992, did not sell well, and Virgin quickly dismissed the group. Unfazed, Dylan put together a new Wallflowers group, keeping just Jaffee and adding guitarist Michael Ward, bassist Greg Richling, and drummer Mario Calire. The trio signed with Interscope, and producer T-Bone Burnett, a longstanding friend of the Dylan family, helped them make their second album. The alternative radio hit 6th Avenue Heartache was produced by the album Bringing Down the Horse, which was published in May 1996. One Headlight, a song that was published at the end of 1996, reached the Top Ten by the spring of 1997, propelling Bringing Down the Horse to the top of the charts as well.
