About The Twilight Sad
The Twilight Sad Biography
Distinctive for its abundance of loudness, accordion, and James Graham's strong Scottish accent In late 2003, the Glasgow, Scotland-based band the Twilight Sad was formed by Graham (vocals), Andy MacFarlane (guitar accordion), Craig Orzel (bass), and Mark Devine (drums). They holed up in the studio to compose new music after performing a couple of gigs in Glasgow that comprised lengthy pieces of music performed on a variety of instruments. With four brand-new songs in hand, they delivered a demo to Fat Cat in September 2005. They ultimately ended up sharing a showcase bill alongside the Mutts Charlottefield, Rank Deluxe, and Frightened Rabbit thanks to the label. The full-length Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters was released by The Twilight Sad the following April. The band's debut EP was released in the United States in November 2006. The Here It Never Snowed EP from 2008. The CD Afterwards It Did include reworkings of some of the songs with simpler, more acoustic arrangements, as well as a version of Some Things Last a Long Time by Daniel Johnston. That year also saw the publication of Kill My Parents and Hit the Road, a collection of songs by the Smiths, Joy Division, and other artists that included additional covers. While working on their second album, The Twilight Sad continued to travel, including dates with Mogwai in the US and performing in the UK. The album's tracks started to circulate online in the spring of 2009, with the single I Became a Prostitute arriving in August and Reflection from the Television making its online debut in May on Pitchfork's website. Forget the Night Ahead, which was co-produced by guitarist McFarlane and Paul Savage of the Delgados and featured a darker, more streamlined style than the band's earlier output, was released in the fall.
