The Turtles Biography

Despite hitting number one with Happy Together in 1967, the Turtles only had three more Top Ten songs before disbanding at the end of the decade. Kaylan and Volman eventually joined Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention in the early 1970s and recorded as Flo & Eddie, but by the mid-'80s, they were back on the oldies circuit with a revised Turtles. Howard Kaylan (b. Howard Kaplan) and Mark Volman were born two months apart in 1947 (but on opposite coasts) and attended the same Los Angeles high school, Westchester High (Kaylan had moved from New York as a child). Kaylan's instrumental surf band, the Nightriders, was quickly discovered by Volman while they were both singing in the school's a cappella choir (which also included choir members Al Nichol on lead guitar, Don Murray on drums, and Chuck Portz on bass). Volman joined the band just before they changed their name to the Crossfires in 1963. The Crossfires persisted after high school graduation as its members attended local universities (picking up rhythm guitarist Jim Tucker along the way).
