The Sword Biography

American heavy metal band The Sword is from Austin, Texas. The band, which was founded in 2003, is now made up of drummer Santiago Jimmy Vela III, guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie, and vocalist John D. Cronise. The band, which was initially signed to Kemado Records, published its first album Age of Winters in 2006; the majority of the songs on it were written by Cronise before the band was ever formed. Two years after the album's release, Gods of the Earth, the group made its debut on the US Billboard 200 list. The band's 2010 concept album Warp Riders, which was based on an original science fiction story, was the first time they had worked with an outside producer, Matt Bayles. Trivett Wingo, the original drummer, departed the band later in the year, and Kevin Fender briefly filled in before Vela joined in 2011. The band released its fourth album, Apocryphon, in 2012 after joining Razor & Tie, and the record was marketed internationally on the Apocryphon Tour. High Country, the group's fifth album, was released in 2015. The Sword is a stoner rock and doom metal band that draws inspiration from acts like Black Sabbath and Sleep. Since its inception, the group has performed on tour with several other rock and metal bands, such as Metallica, Lamb of God, and Clutch. More recently, the group has also opened for other bands. Age of Winters, the debut album by The Sword, didn't do well on the charts, but the band's subsequent albums, including High Country, have all had growing financial success in the US and the UK.
