The Specials, an English 2 Tone ska revival band, were founded in Coventry, England, in 1977. They are also known as The Special AKA. In addition to having a more concentrated and well-informed political and social perspective than other ska groups, their music mixed a danceable ska and rocksteady beat with punk's intensity and attitude.
Jerry Dammers, a lyricist and keyboardist, started the band with Terry Hall, a guitarist who also sings, Lynval Golding, a drummer, and a rhythm section. The band wore 1960s nasty boy clothes in the mod style (pork pie hats tonic and mohair suits and loafers).
