Christopher Francis Patten completed his education at Balliol College Oxford, where he studied Modern History and was chosen as a Domus Exhibitioner. He also attended St. Benedict's School in Ealing. He received a Coolidge Traveling Scholarship to the United States in 1965. In 1966, he began working with the Conservative Research Department.

When Lord Carrington and Lord Whitelaw led the Conservative Party from 1972 to 1974, he served as their political secretary and personal assistant after being seconded to the Cabinet Office in 1970. He was hired as the Conservative Research Department's youngest-ever director in 1974, a position he maintained until 1979.
