The Roots is an American hip-hop group founded in 1987 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Tariq Black Thought Trotter and Ahmir Questlove Thompson. The Roots are renowned for their jazzy, edgy, and varied style of hip-hop that incorporates real musical instruments. The band now includes Josh Abrams and Malik B. Leonard Hub Hubbard (formerly named The Square Roots).
The band has produced ten studio albums, two EPs, and two collaboration albums (with other artists), and working with a broad range of musicians in different musical genres on recordings and live performances since its debut independently released full-length album.
