About The Polyphonic Spree

The Polyphonic Spree Biography

The Polyphonic Spree is a Dallas, Texas-based choral symphonic pop-rock band founded in 2000 by lead singer Tim DeLaughter. With a choir, flute, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, percussion, piano, guitars, bass, drums, electronic keyboards, and EWI, the band's sound is rich in vocal and musical richness. Former member of the band, St. Vincent. Tripping Daisy, DeLaughter's former band, disbanded in 1999 after guitarist Wes Berggren died of a heroin overdose. Part of bringing The Polyphonic Spree to life was a reaction to his passing. In the year 2000, DeLaughter teamed together with twelve other musicians to create a sound that mirrored the music he grew up listening to. The Polyphonic Spree wrote a 30-minute performance in two weeks, dressed in their distinctive white choir robes, and played their first live gig. Twelve more players joined the band shortly after their first concert, and they recorded “The Beginning Stages of... The Polyphonic Spree,” which included all nine songs (parts) created for their first show, plus a tenth track (“Section 10 – Long Day”). The CD, which was published in 2002, was meant to be used as a demo tape to entice people to hire the band for live shows. Several of the album's songs were included in television advertisements and feature films, boosting their fame. “Together We're Heavy,” their second album, was released by Hollywood Records in 2004. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums list. The popular songs "Hold Me Now" and "Two Thousand Places" were included on the album. Instead of their usual all-white outfits, the band wore multicolored robes on their second tour. Mike Mills' feature film "Thumbsucker" was released in 2005, with a score created by Tim DeLaughter and performed by The Polyphonic Spree. In June 2007, the band released their third full-length album, "The Fragile Army," which was produced by John Congleton. For their 2007 tours, the Polyphonic Spree ditched their robes in favor of black army uniforms, however, they wore the traditional white robes for encores. Bullseye, an interactive music video app for iOS devices, was published in July 2011 and included the first single from a planned collection of songs.
