The Long Ryders Biography

The Long Ryders are an American alternative country and Paisley Underground band that was mainly active between 1983 and 1987. In response to fan requests, the group has frequently come back together for brief reunions (2004, 2009, 2016). Several multi-instrumentalist American artists influenced by bands like Gram Parsons, The Byrds, and different country and punk rock bands came together to form The Long Ryders. Their name is a reference to the Walter Hill movie The Long Riders. The band included Greg Sowders on drums and percussion, Sid Griffin on guitar, autoharp, and bugle, Stephen McCarthy on steel guitar, mandolin, and banjo, Des Brewer on bass (later replaced by Tom Stevens), and Sid Griffin on guitar, autoharp, and banjo. Despite having two members who were transplants from the American South, they formed a well-known Los Angeles rock band in the early 1980s and were initially linked to the Paisley Underground movement. They predated the alternative country music of the 1990s by ten years with a sound evocative of the Beatles' Rubber Soul period electrified Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, and The Flying Burrito Brothers, but with a rougher edge. Their early music was influenced by old-school country and punk, partly thanks to obsessive record collector Griffin (championed by McCarthy). They were joined by former Byrd Gene Clark, who contributed vocals to the song Ivory Tower on the 1984 Native Sons album.
