Jacob Tilove, Ed Helms, and Ian Riggs make up The Lonesome Trio. A weird and fortunate meeting occurred amid northern Ohio's undulating plains twenty-two years ago. d Helms A shared appreciation for great whisky and bluegrass brought together Ian Riggs and Jacob Tilove while they were still Oberlin College students. Soon, music started to occur. A distinct musical voice emerged due to the melodic yelling of the three musicians, Riggs on bass, Helms on guitar, and Tilove on mandolin. A loosely-knit group named Weedkiller was soon formed when more pals joined in on various banjos and fiddles. For a few fantastic years, they performed on back porches, in front yards, and at basement keg parties across Oberlin, but when college finished, Weedkiller also disappeared. As the world would have it, Ed Jake and Ian ended themselves in New York City to pursue their various wacky hobbies of comic architectural history and jazz bass studies. Even though city life was thrilling and frantic, their musical connection and friendship persisted, and their frequent, unofficial jam sessions kept everyone grounded. These unofficial meetings eventually evolved into songwriting and a few unofficial recording sessions. The Lonesome Trio soon began receiving requests to perform at friends' parties and weddings. Before they knew it, they were regular on the NYC bluegrass scene, performing at venues like the Parkside Lounge, Rockwood Music Hall, and other sleazy hangouts for the old-time crowd. The Lonesome Trio persisted as a constant in the upheaval-filled lives of its committed members despite having active jobs in various disciplines. The Lonesome Trio's distinctive voice and sound have been compared to rootsy bluegrass-like Americana or a little cowboy. A more accurate description, though, maybe the odd mind meld of three longtime friends who have shared 22 years of life experiences, including love, heartbreak, and laughter, and who are now working it all out via their frank and real acoustic music.
