The Impressions Biography

Under Mayfield's direction, the Impressions produced some of the most unique vocal-group R&B of the 1960s. Airy, feather-light harmonies and Mayfield's minimalist guitar work, as well as subdued Latin rhythms, characterized their sound. They popularised the three-part vocal trade-offs common in the gospel but rare in R&B at the time and recorded a fair share of songs with spiritual themes, both subtle and overt. If their sound was sweet and lilting, it remained richly soulful thanks to the group's firm grounding in the Mayfield's engagement in the civil rights movement resulting in some of the first socially aware R&B songs ever recorded, and his sentiments became more apparent as the 1960s progressed, culminating in his early-'70s solo work, which was a streak of brilliance.
