Under Mayfield's direction, the Impressions produced some of the most unique vocal-group R&B of the 1960s. Airy, feather-light harmonies and Mayfield's minimalist guitar work, as well as subdued Latin rhythms, characterized their sound.
They popularised the three-part vocal trade-offs common in the gospel but rare in R&B at the time and recorded a fair share of songs with spiritual themes, both subtle and overt.
