The Hold Steady Biography

The Hold Steady is a Brooklyn, New York-based indie rock band that formed in 2004. Craig Finn (vocals, guitar), Tad Kubler (lead guitar), Galen Polivka (bass), Bobby Drake (drums), and Steve Selvidge (drums) make up the band (guitar). The band's narrative-based compositions typically explore topics like drug addiction, religion, and salvation, and frequently take place inside the city of Minneapolis. The Hold Steady's 2004 first album "Almost Killed Me," released on Frenchkiss Records four years after Finn and Kubler's prior band, Lifter Puller, broke up, was a sleeper smash among music critics. In May 2005, the band released its second album, "Separation Sunday." The album was loosely based on the adventures of a figure named "Holly" (short for "Hallelujah") and her journey to achieve a balance between Catholicism and rock & roll through drugs and a symbolic resurrection. The album received positive reviews, with several critics noticing its religious connotations. With the release of their third studio album, "Boys and Girls in America," in 2006, the band switched from Frenchkiss Records to Vagrant Records and rose to popularity. “Stay Positive,” the band's fourth album, was released in July 2008. With producer John Agnello, the album was recorded in Hoboken, New Jersey, and Queens, New York's Wild Arctic studio. Lucero's Ben Nichols, Dinosaur Jr.'s J. Mascis, Emilyn Brodsky, and Doug Gillard, who played guitar in Guided By Voices, were among the guests on the recordings. The band published "A Positive Rage," a two-disc documentary and live CD package, in April 2009. Prior to the recording of their fifth studio album, 2010's "Heaven Is Whenever," keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist Franz Nicolay quit the band. With the arrival of former Lucero guitarist Steve Selvidge on the band's subsequent tour, the band became a five-piece once more.
