The Fray gained mainstream success with their 2005 debut How to Save a Life by positioning their sound midway between the arena-friendly style of U2 and the sophisticated pop/rock of artists like Maroon 5 and Counting Crows.

When old classmates Joe King (guitar vocals) and Isaac Slade (vocals, piano) suddenly ran into each other at a nearby music store, the Denver-based band was born. Following a series of two-person jam sessions, the duo added guitarist David Welsh and drummer Ben Wysocki, both former members of Slade.

Caleb, Slade's younger brother, briefly joined the group before being forced to leave; the ensuing conflict between the two siblings subsequently served as the basis for the group's first number-one song, Over My Head (Cable Car).

The group earned support from Denver's KTCL radio station with a follow-up release in 2003, the Reason EP, after releasing the Movement EP in 2002. The Fray started drawing interest from Epic Records as their radio play and local prominence grew (Westword, a Denver alternative weekly journal, named them Best New Band in 2004).

The label finally signed the band in December 2004, and the following summer, the Fray went on tour with Weezer and Ben Folds. After the September 2005 release of How to Save a Life, Over My Head (Cable Car) quickly became a favorite on current rock radio.

It entered the Top 40 list at the beginning of 2006, peaked at number 8, and whetted the public's hunger for another hit. The Fray replied by releasing the album's first song, one of 2006's top singles after being widely featured in a Grey's Anatomy TV show advertising campaign.

How to Save a Life was an international hit that peaked at number one in Bulgaria, Ireland, Canada, and Spain and hit the Top Ten in the United States (where it remained on the charts for 58 consecutive weeks).

When the dust settled, the Fray's first album had earned double platinum status in the United States and had become the best-selling digital record of all time.
