In 1953, an American doo-wop and R&B/Soul group known as The Drifters were originally formed to serve as a back up group for Clyde McPhatter of Billy Ward and his Dominoes. The Drifters were low-paid musicians hired by George Treadwell, who owned the Drifters name and were the least stable of the great vocal groups according to Rolling Stone Magazine.

In the history of the Treadwell Drifters line, there have been 60 vocalists including several splinter groups by former Drifters members not under Treadwell's management. These groups are recognized by a possessive credit such as Charlie Thomas' Drifters, Bill Pinkney's Original Drifters, etc.
