The Decemberists, led by Montana native Colin Meloy, produce dramatic, hyper-educated pop songs that heavily influence mid-'80s school rock greatness like the Waterboys and R.E.M. and late '60s British social bands like Fairport Convention and Pentangle. The band's core lineup comprised multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk, bassist Nate Query, pianist Jenny Conlee, and drummer Ezra Holbrook.
Frontman Meloy had recently given some excellent time to an elective nation group before separating to pursue his craft as a musician/lyricist in Portland. This decision ultimately led to the formation of the Decemberists.
