At their height, the group, which included Greg Dulli on vocals and mood guitar, Rick McCollum on lead guitar, John Curley on bass, and various drummers, including Steve Earle and Michael Horrigan, became one of the foremost ensembles of 1990s elective stone, climbing above and around the grunge movement.
The Afghan Whigs, who began as a four-piece carport punk band in the style of the Replacements, Dinosaur Jr., and Mudhoney, eventually became one of the most well-liked alternative bands of the mid-1990s and one of the first pioneers from the American outside-the-box underground to abuse the assistance of major labels.
