The senior Senator from Mississippi and member of the Republican Party is William Thad Cochran. First elected to the Senate in 1978, he holds that post after serving as the chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee from 2003 to 2005 and the Senate Appropriations Committee from 2005 to 2007.
Cochran is the second-most senior Republican member and the third-most senior Senator. In 2014, he was seeking a re-appointment. In the Republican primary in June 2014, Cochran came in second place to state legislator Chris McDaniel, who received 49.57% of the vote. However, Cochran won the June 24, 2014, run-off with 48.88% of the vote.
