Born in Waxahachie, Texas, Tevin Campbell was able to sing enthusiastically when he was little. He began by performing gospel music at Jacob's Chapel in a little town just south of Dallas, Texas, first as an ensemble member and then as a soloist. Campbell auditioned for jazz flutist Bobbi Humphrey in 1988 with the help of Campbell's mother's friend by singing to her over the phone in New York. Humphrey interviewed Campbell and gave Warner Bros. a sound and tape. This sparked a meeting with the senior vice president and general project manager of dark music at Warner, Benny Medina. In August 1989, Campbell was introduced to the R&B scene by Quincy Jones. Tomorrow (A Better You Better Me), Campbell's debut single peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Singles chart in June 1990. This was The Brothers Johnson's instrumental from 1976 with vocals added. It served as the lead single for Jones' critically acclaimed group's 1991 Grammy Award-winning album of the same name, Back on the Block. To record different music, Siedah Garrett Campbell collaborated with producers Narada Michael Walden Al B. Sure Babyface and others after working with Jones, essayists, and other creators.
