Born in Waxahachie, Texas, Tevin Campbell was able to sing enthusiastically when he was little. He began by performing gospel music at Jacob's Chapel in a little town just south of Dallas, Texas, first as an ensemble member and then as a soloist.
Campbell auditioned for jazz flutist Bobbi Humphrey in 1988 with the help of Campbell's mother's friend by singing to her over the phone in New York. Humphrey interviewed Campbell and gave Warner Bros. a sound and tape. This sparked a meeting with the senior vice president and general project manager of dark music at Warner, Benny Medina.
