Waite has long been dedicated to fostering cross-cultural understanding and compromise. In the 1980s, as the Archbishop of Canterbury's special ambassador, he successfully organized the release of prisoners in Iran and Libya, earning him widespread acclaim. Unfortunately, Waite was abducted in 1987 while planning the arrival of detainees in Beirut.
He was imprisoned for 1763 days, four of which were spent in solitary, and during that time, he was tied to a wall, beaten, and subjected to cruel executions.
