After graduating from the University of Arizona in 1974 with a B.A., he began working at Federated Merchandising Group.
He eventually rose to the post of Chairman and CEO in 1994, a role he held until 1997. After three years, he joined Federated Department Stores, the official name of Macy's. His retail work has been acknowledged and regarded commonly. He received the National Retail Federation's Gold Medal Award in 2008.
