Although the on-screen character's chameleon-like abilities have enabled him to obtain various roles on the stage and screen, his talent has ultimately created the foundation of his struggling profession. After finishing secondary school, the Lincoln, Illinois, resident enrolled at Illinois State University.
He met Jeff Perry, a budding entertainer, there, who invited Kinney to Chicago to witness his close friend perform in a stage production of Grease. Gary Sinise, a young performer with aspirations, was Perry's partner, and the three soon discussed starting their local theatre.
