Terry Gilliam enrolled at Birmingham High School when his family relocated to California due to his sister's asthma. He was elected class president and senior prom king, was named 'Most Likely to Succeed,' and maintained a perfect academic record. He found Mad magazine in high school, which was then edited by Harvey Kurtzman, and this would subsequently inspire his work.
When Gilliam finished high school, he enrolled at Occidental College, where he majored in political science after initially studying physics and then fine arts. Gilliam was a contributor to Fang, the campus journal, and subsequently became the editor, converting it into a homage to Kurtzman, to whom Terry later mailed copies.
