About Terri Bowersock

Terri Bowersock Biography

What I remember most about school are the red-pen comments like "bad work," "lazy," and "did you read your assignment" that were written all over my papers. I was worried that if I gave someone something I had written, they would think I was an idiot. I used to play pool on my head with my fifth-grade teacher, who used to call me "stupid as a cue ball." They took me to a professional who identified my condition as dyslexia. Which is that? When we attempt to recollect how to spell a word, read, or perform math, the left half of our brains—the part that arranges letters and numbers in sequence—fails. Despite my mother's best efforts, I learned by depending on my extroverted attitude to get through (and cheating on spelling tests). In addition, I would use intuition and what is now referred to as "universal knowledge." I somehow completed my education! It was then time for me to submit my first job application. After realizing I couldn't finish it halfway through, I sneaked out of the interview room. In Kansas, I contacted my father (Mom and I moved to Phoenix, Ariz., after my parents divorced). I responded, "I'm at a loss for what to do, Dad. I'm unable to find work." "Come out and visit me, and I'll help you," he retorted. I discovered my future while I was visiting my dad! I got to know two women who ran "The Clearing House," a shop that sold goods to other individuals. I said in my head, "I can do it!" I then created my business strategy at home. I genuinely used colored pencils and crayons to "draw" my strategy. We're going to be wealthy; I told Mom over the phone. Oh no, she said, "Now what?" I described how we would be selling gently used furniture. "You mean we're going to be Sanford & Son?" she questioned. I answered, "No, I'm not sure for sure. I have confidence in my ability to complete this." So, using a $2,000 loan from my grandmother and my mother's living room furniture and the bedroom set I had as a youngster, we launched Terri's Home Store in 1979 and gradually expanded it across the country. So, what exactly did we do? In any case, I excelled in marketing and advertising. I realized nobody had ever promoted used furniture on television; used automobile advertisements were common, so why not furniture? So I did it. After our TV commercial debuted, we quickly quadrupled our revenue. We made a fantastic team since Mom was an expert at selling and decorating. Unfortunately, she met a fascinating man named Taw Benderly in 1986, and things started to go wrong. She instructed me to buy her out or allow her to do so. Ultimately, I bought her out and carried on the firm alone. I went to the nearby Arizona State University (ASU) to learn how to read and spell now that I was on my own. You don't teach this in a way that makes it simple for people with dyslexia to grasp, I snapped back at them. After that, I started working on a right-brain phonic mapping book. I wrote "The Spelling Map," a book that has garnered numerous accolades and has been used in classrooms around the nation in less than a year. Now that I could read more clearly, I was prepared to take the risk. I assembled a squad. I began franchising after hiring a chief executive officer, an operating officer, and a chief financial officer. I gained national recognition with 420 articles and 25 regional and national honors. I began making presentations at chambers of commerce, universities, and business organizations around the country. Then my life was transformed on that day. Oprah. The night before the performance is one I'll never forget. I stated while standing outdoors and gazing up into the desert sky of Arizona: "I'll appear on Oprah. That it isn't the Jerry Springer program is a blessing." It may have been considering my grades. I inhaled deeply after that and understood how significant this experience was for me. I only wanted to demonstrate my intelligence to my friends, family, and instructors. The next day, I appeared on Oprah's program about "surprise millionaires." Wow, she truly is all that, and even more, significant, her followers were ecstatic, which says a lot about Oprah as a person and a leader. I returned to work after the exhibition with renewed pride and vigor. To encourage others to pursue their dreams, I created a second book titled "Success, It Can Be Yours." I still believed I needed to treat my dyslexia at 36. The argument was that the white paper was distracting and made it harder for the brain to see. I had tried everything, from colorful contact lenses on my spectacles to a sound wave attached to my brain to smooth out the misfiring, but nothing worked. Then I thought, "Great, I'll be clever," when a chiropractor claimed to have the solution. I then heard a loud snap after receiving one strong shove and having his thumb in my mouth. He had caused me to have a stroke-like effect by breaking my sphenoid bone. This resulted in several medical doctor visits and subsequent consultations with spiritual healers and other alternative healthcare professionals. I persevered throughout the 14 years it took me to control the headaches and ringing in my ears. By day, I worked, and I iced my head at night. Although challenging, I gained a great deal of knowledge about life, religion, and God as well as how to accept and value everything. I become a wonderful leader with a lot of heart and soul by 2004. I had authored five books, including "The Furniture Blue Book," which was the key to Terri's Home Store's success. My blue book, similar to the Kelley Blue Book for cars, is how we teach Terri's staff about consistent pricing. The economy was strong. Life was good. Then, in 2005, Mom was killed, and her corpse was left undiscovered in the desert. I knew I had to locate her to learn the truth and identify her killer. So, working with a group of volunteers, I scoured a sandy desert area of 100 miles by 100 miles every day. Thirteen months after she vanished, we discovered her remains thanks to the strength of everyone's prayers and great persistence. In 2007, I created a unique idea to genuinely "go green" in a corporate setting, using the power of positive thinking and the manifestation mindset of the book "The Secret." I plan to recycle everything, including clothing and furniture, as well as materials like glass, leather, and plastic. In my mother's words, the delight of discovering a gem for your house is "the finest part of recycling via consignment." My mother, who was always the consignment queen, adored the game "guess what I spent for this." I adore the earth. And I'm seeking partners to help me establish a network of shops where we can recycle the priceless resources of our planet. I wish to support those who share my beliefs in creating their businesses and becoming successful.
