When Teresa Scanlan was chosen as Miss America 2011, she became the youngest woman to hold the title in more than 70 years and the first Miss Nebraska ever to win. Teresa, a Nebraska native from Gering, is Mark and Janie Scanlan's little daughter. Teresa, the middle child of seven, self-taught herself through her first year of high school and then graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 2010, one year early. Her most lofty professional goals are to become President or a Supreme Court Justice. She wants to become a judge and eventually get involved in politics. She wants to distinguish the stereotype of distorted and dishonest government officials working more under the banner of character and integrity as a Christian in the political sphere. As Miss America 2011, Teresa made an effort to promote The Miss America Organization, the grants it provides to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, and her foundation on dietary issues, in addition to supporting horticulture, The Hand That Feeds the U.S., the USO, and our nation's military personnel. She has put out effort as a spokesperson and supporter for several organizations and causes, such as the Taste of the NFL, the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, the American Cancer Society, and Youth Service America.
