Tegla Loroupe, a long-distance track and road runner, and a global spokesman for peace, women's rights, and education, was born on May 9, 1973, in Kapsait, Kenya. Loroupe has world records in distances of 20, 25, and 30 kilometers, as well as the global marathon record. She has won the World Half-Marathon three times.
She was the first African woman to win the New York City Marathon twice.
