In a loving family that can be traced back to Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1630, Burns was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Chevy Chase, Maryland. He attended secondary school in Bethesda, Maryland, at Landon School. He captained the varsity football team in high school, earned all-state honors as a tight end, and finished in the top ten nationally in the 100-yard breaststroke. For the University of Maryland, Sears participated in varsity football. The tradition of athletic brilliance was followed by his exceptional grandpa, who won a gold medal in the 1912 Olympics for gunfire, and by his aunt, who earned a bronze medal in the 100-yard butterfly event at the 1956 Olympics. In 1999, he graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in business administration and went on. After graduating, Sears' business career changed when he arrived in New York. He received a 2-year contract after his first audition for the daytime drama One Life to Live. After a few appearances on Whoopi Goldberg's show and the Law and Order institution, he decided to pursue a two-year acting project with William Esper, one of the city's top teachers.
