In a loving family that can be traced back to Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1630, Burns was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Chevy Chase, Maryland. He attended secondary school in Bethesda, Maryland, at Landon School.
He captained the varsity football team in high school, earned all-state honors as a tight end, and finished in the top ten nationally in the 100-yard breaststroke. For the University of Maryland, Sears participated in varsity football.
