Ted-Jan Bloemen Biography

Dutch-conceived Ted-Jan Bloemen relocated to the country of his father's birth in June 2014, and after accepting his new visa, he joined the Canadian national team for the 2014–15 season. The 2015 World Single Distances Championships saw Canada capture group interest silver thanks in large part to his nearly immediate impact. In 2015–16, he finished a lifetime year. He smashed the 10000m world record that had stood since March 2007 in the subsequent World Cup of the time in Salt Lake City in November with his season's time of 12:36.30. Bloemen went on to take home the 10000m silver medal at the World Single Distances Championships, giving Canada its first notable global victory in the sport's longest competition since the 1932 Olympic Winter Games. He also received bronze for the team effort at the worlds. He was named Speed Skating Canada's Long Track Male Athlete of the Year and won that year's Oscar Mathisen Award for the world's most exceptional speed skating performance. Bloemen finished second in the overall World Cup rankings for the 5000m/10000m even though he missed the considerable showdown platform in 2016–17 because of his consistency throughout the season. One of the highlights was his first World Cup victory in the 5000m. Bloemen broke the 5000-meter world record in Salt Lake City during the World Cup in December 2017. A 10-year-old record was broken with his season of 6:01.86. For the central 10000m World Cup of the time, he continued to compete on each of the three 5000m platforms in the fall of 2017.
