American politician and attorney Ted Cruz has been the junior Texas senator since 2013. He came in second place in the 2016 presidential election for the Republican nomination. Cruz graduated from Harvard Law School and Princeton University. He held several government positions between 1999 and 2003, including those of Associate Deputy Attorney General at the U.S.
Department of Justice, Director of the Office of Policy Planning at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and Domestic Policy Advisor to George W. Bush the latter's 2000 presidential campaign. Greg Abbott, the Texas Attorney General at the time and ultimately the Governor, chose Cruz to serve as Solicitor General of Texas from 2003 to 2008.
