Maslany's lineage includes Romanian, Austrian, German, Ukrainian, and Polish. Maslany appeared as Lindsay Rollins in The Messengers in 2007. Additionally, she appeared in the CBC series Heartland as Kit Bailey, a barrel racer riding Daisy. She portrayed Penny, a grabbing victim, in the Canadian TV show Flashpoint in September 2008. In the second season of the Canadian mockumentary series Being Erica in 2010, Maslany appeared as Sarah Wexler, the heroin-dependent daughter of Dr. Tom Wexlar.
