The oldest of eight children, Tashera Jamilia Draughn, was born in New York City on April 10, 1971. Her Brooklyn-born father and Panamanian-born mother relocated her and her family to Yonkers, New York, a suburb of New York City, in 1978. The Draughn family struggled, despite Yonkers being a better place to live than Manhattan's drug-filled streets.
Due to her parents' struggles with stress and medicines, Tashera and her family were abandoned in 1985, leaving Tashera to take on the role of mother while attending class and working odd jobs for cash under the table to support her family.
