Igor Shpilband and Marina Zoueva, Belbin and Agosto's longtime tutors, were fired in 2008. As a lifetime change, it was unsettling. Belbin explains that it is risky to be this far along and make such a significant shift. We felt that our progress as skaters had gotten a little monotonous and that we needed to move a little farther. To train with Natalya Linichuk and Gennadi Karponosov, the team that guided Oksana Grishuk and Yevgeny Platov to Olympic Gold in 1994, the couple relocated to the Philadelphia suburb of Aston, Pennsylvania. After appearing in Pennsylvania two months prior, their Russian opponents, Oksana Domnina and Maksim Shabalin joined them in Aston. At the 2009 Worlds, Domnina and Shabalin defeated Belbin and Agosto for the gold medal, indicating that the top two teams will share the ice and mentors leading up to and during the 2010 Vancouver Games. Belbin and Agosto agreed that doing their biggest penance near where they lived was necessary since they both believed they had ties to Detroit and friends there. Belbin, a recent U.S. resident, and Agosto then made a splash in Torino by moving up from sixth place in the required move to second place in the Original Dance after a wild night of skating in which five groups suffered tumbles. Although they made a few little mistakes during the free skate, they held on to secure the silver medal, which was the most significant result by a U.S. move team since Colleen O'Connor and Jim Millns earned bronze in 1976.
