Igor Shpilband and Marina Zoueva, Belbin and Agosto's longtime tutors, were fired in 2008. As a lifetime change, it was unsettling. Belbin explains that it is risky to be this far along and make such a significant shift. We felt that our progress as skaters had gotten a little monotonous and that we needed to move a little farther.
To train with Natalya Linichuk and Gennadi Karponosov, the team that guided Oksana Grishuk and Yevgeny Platov to Olympic Gold in 1994, the couple relocated to the Philadelphia suburb of Aston, Pennsylvania. After appearing in Pennsylvania two months prior, their Russian opponents, Oksana Domnina and Maksim Shabalin joined them in Aston.
