Sylvia Hurtado Biography

Professor Sylvia Hurtado works in the Higher Education and Organizational Change Division at UCLA's Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. The Cooperative Institutional Research Program is housed at the Higher Education Research Institute, which she now directs (CIRP). The longest-running experimental study of advanced education involving data collection on students and professors is called CIRP. Her numerous distributions are focused on undergrad education, school improvement, and respectable variation in progressive education. She served on the boards of the Higher Learning Commission and the activities of the Association of American Colleges and Universities. She is a former president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). Recent national initiatives have looked at the pathways taken by underrepresented students in analytical research and expert professions (National Institutes of Health/National Science Foundation), how schools are preparing students to participate in a different popular government (U.S. Division of Education), and the student and institutional outcomes of various and expansive access establishments in advanced education (Ford Foundation). She graduated from Princeton University, Harvard Graduate School of Education, and UCLA with a Ph.D. (A.B.).
