The Chief Environmental Research Scientist at Environmental Health Research Associates, LLC is Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington. With 30 years of research experiences as an environmental engineer, environmental historian and environmental epidemiologist, she works on the effects of industrial pollution on human health and ecosystems using quantitative and qualitative analyses. Dr. Washington implemented the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Research Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Superfund and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), regulations for effluents and solid waste derived from power generation sources (space and terrestrial systems) for both industry and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully. Dr. Washington qualifies as a Climate Reality Leader with an interest in communicating climate change to environmental justice communities in the Great Lakes region. She is also the creator and editor-in-chief of the first international environmental health disparities journal, Environmental Justice and a published author. She created her own environmental health research-consulting firm known as Environmental Health Research Associates (E3HRA), LLC. Dr. Washington regularly consults with environmental law firms as well as grassroots community groups to help them understand environmental health disparities, the history of industrial operations, transportation systems and the impact of municipal planning on human health. She was voted in as Co-Chair of the Illinois EPA’s Environmental Justice Advisory Board on November 2010. The Board comprises of leaders from private industry, non-governmental organizations, Environmental Justice groups, municipal officials and law firms in Illinois. She was selected to sit on the first Environmental Justice Commission by Governor Patrick Quinn for the state of Illinois in 2012.
