American marine biologist Sylvia Earle also works as an adventurer, author, and lecturer. Since 1998, she has served as an explorer-in-residence for National Geographic. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's first female head scientist, Earle, was also Time Magazine's inaugural Hero for the Planet in 1998.
She is a member of the Ocean Elders organization, which works to preserve the ocean and its inhabitants.
