The idea with Woody Esso was to form something other than a band. Or perhaps Amelia Meath and her group Mountain Man sang a song they wrote titled Play It Right. She had crossed paths with Nick Sanborn, an electronic designer going by the moniker Made of Oak while passing a mutual bill at a little club somewhere. She asked him to jumble it so that he could take control of her job. He performed the required remix but saw that this was more than just a one-time handoff: Sanborn had modified a sizable number of songs, but this was the first time he felt as though he had enhanced rather than diminished the original piece as if he had unintentionally found his new partner across the underground wires of the internet record market. It was also felt in Meath. Calendars were changed. There was movement. Sanborn and Meath reunited again as 2012 turned into 2013 in Durham, North Carolina, a former assembly town with affordable housing and delicious food. Woody Esso formed a band. After a year, their self-titled debut, a compilation of arresting addictions about endurance and love, haziness, and deliverance, is released. It is a heavily weighted collection with melodies that don't withstand the enduring nuances of that term. Given the levels of movement and affects that these ten songs have, it is an astounding feat that they were recognized and recorded in Sanborn's Durham chamber within the most recent year.
